Travel For Change

This little story came out in the December issue of GO Magazine, Airtran’s Inflight. Small as it might be, Lao-tzu said it best: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

  1. We have a story that needs to be told. I am a grandfather who loves his granddaughter very much. My granddaughter went into foster care last jan. and we were unable to foster her because of the distance but were told that if her mother was unable to pull herself together that she would then be adopted by us or we would receive guardianship. Now we are being told that because of the laws she will be put up for adoption and that the foster family has more rights then us. We travel 500mile several times a month to visit her, she know us and loves us.The CASA worker came to town to meet us and we invited family who wanted to help us express our love for her and how important family is 14 family members attended. This child is loved and wanted and now she will be ripped from her family and placed in a new one. That means completely cut off from us. Us no longer being legally her family. This is wrong on so many levels. She is not an orphan. She has family who love her and would do anything not to have her ripped from them. Someone needs to change this law that says if a child resides in a foster home that they automatically have the first choice to adopt the child over any family. We are the link to her past her future. We can help her know who she is and why. We have heard this story to many times and someone needs to speak for these children and their families. They always search for their blood relatives. They say their whole lives they were missing a piece of themselves. The law gives them preference no matter what. We all bond in our lives throughout our lives and not all are healthy not all fulfill our emotional needs. This is not even a consideration, time is all it takes to be the one that has the rights. Please help us we need to be heard for all the children and families who have been robbed of knowing and loving each other.
    Thank you,
